Katana ZERO is a full and fascinating narrative world, which opens up in the incredible interludes between one level and another. Occasionally, we will also have the opportunity to do some real plot choices during the levels, which will lead to a different result for the current mission and - potentially - for the ending of the game itself.īut the juiciest part of the game, paradoxically, isn't during the levels. The result, more often than not, is nothing short of spectacular.įor each mission, the Dragon will be assigned a target, which we will have to reach by killing any enemy in our path. IS watching the replays at the end of each scenario is almost a must, almost a fundamental part of the experience, in a form of self-glorification of our work that will allow us to admire our movements a posteriori. In other words: prepare to die several times.īut the most spectacular mechanic at our disposal concerns the possibility of slow down time during the levels, to ensure victory in the most scenic way possible. This is Katana ZERO: a fast-paced 2D action game, in which failure is not punished but, on the contrary, almost encouraged.

Imagine a Hotline Miami with 2D scrolling front view, with the same trial and error mechanics and the ability to jump, dodge, deflect bullets with a katana and throw objects around. And the whole is intertwined in a breathtaking mix of cyberpunk and dark urban. From the typically nineties videotapes in the main menu, to the beautiful soundtracks to the synthwave that are the background to the levels. Katana ZERO is the sum of all these things, and the result is a game that makes the eyes shine with its beauty.
You could mention the beautiful 2D neon setting, the gorgeous soundtrack, the dirty and punk art style, or even get less mental blowjob and think directly that we're impersonating a ninja in a typically western urban context.īut, in any single case, one would still be right. It is difficult to find a strong point for ZERO Katana because there are simply too many. And already from the first level we find ourselves with the heart beating for adrenaline. The game develops through a multiple-choice system for narrated scenes, and frenzied levels of action à la Hotline Miami (more on that later) for the "played" scenes. We the players will take on the role of the "Dragon," a fearsome contract assassin who finds himself embroiled in secrets and plots far greater than him. How do you reinvent Cyberpunkĭeveloped by the guys from Askiisoft, ZERO Katana draws inspiration directly from pure Cyberpunk masterpieces, to the levels of Blade Runner and even a pinch of Gibson's Neuromancer for the exquisitely underground setting.
Katana ZERO is a marvel, with no ifs and buts. And at some point you also think, "why not?" Let's dive right in. ZERO Katana it takes so much that one would almost call it a masterpiece, a small pearl of independent development, a marvel with no ifs and buts. But many masterpieces have one fundamental thing in common: you get to the end that you want more. There are games like The Hex, a virtuoso authorial experiment on the gaming medium, and there are games like Red Dead Redemption 2, which loves to immerse you in a living world from the first five minutes of play.
